Get to know us

Merazonia is a dynamic wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre situated on 250 acres of rainforest in Ecuador. We focus on rehabilitating wildlife that has fallen victim to the illegal pet trade and deforestation, and volunteers from around the world help us with day-to-day care. We combine a passion for nature with a hands-off professional approach towards animal care, release, conservation, and wildlife monitoring.

Your support equals freedom for wildlife

Donations are vital for our daily animal care, release and conservation projects. Although Merazonia works closely with the Ministry of Environment, we do not receive government funding and, for the well-being of the animals, do not receive tourists in our reserve. You can help by becoming a donor, adopting an animal or volunteering with us.

Volunteer at Merazonia

The Merazonia staff has worked side by side with volunteers since the beginning. We invite anyone with a passion for nature to get a bit of jungle dirt under their nails and help us make a difference. Watch this short volunteer-made video to learn more about what to expect during your time at Merazonia!

Rainforest conservation

Since the protection of our 250 acre reserve in 2004, we've watched a broken down ecosystem become a flourishing forest. Over the years we've seen an incredible increase in wildlife activity on our reserve including extraordinary sightings of rare black jaguar, bush dog and Andean bear. Visit our Youtube channel for more sightings or learn more in our blog, linked below.

These numbers tell our story. Last year, we received 55 animals, released 34, transferred 10 and couldn`t save 14. But the cherry on the cake is bright red: we had 2 howler monkey babies born in the wild!
3 September 2024
Merazonia has two exciting ongoing releases: a group of woolly monkeys and red howler monkeys are set free. We also have big plans to build a new health centre, after floodings destroyed our quarantine.

Once upon a dime and a dilly, there was a little Red Howler Monkey named Pepi. Some argued her name should have been PeePee (for obvious reasons) but it never quite stuck...
Giant anteater rehabilitation Ecuador
