Nala arrived at Merazonia as a very small and vulnerable baby. We do not know her full story, but most likely her mother was sold for bushmeat and Nala into the illegal wildlife trade.
As vulnerable as she was, Nala’s confidence and adventurous spirit immediately showed. She is full of personality and despite her rough start in life, we can see that she is a fierce little one.
She currently enjoys supervised play sessions in the jungle where she can practice her climbing skills and forage for her own fresh leaves, both very important skills for when she is old enough to be released. She is also being introduced to another baby Raya.
Howler monkeys are the loudest land mammal and can be heard from over 5 km away! Nala has not quite mastered a majestic howl. But she is quite the noisemaker, ensuring that everyone is aware when she is expecting her milk feeds, with the infamous ‘meeeehhh’ vocalization.
We have rehabilitated and released many howlers in our reserve and recently saw these monkeys reproduce in the wild. With your support, we can prepare Nala for a life in freedom too, as a member of a new group that will be released back into the wild.
